Baku weather is classified as semi-arid and is typified by its cold, wet winters and the hot and dry conditions that dominate the summer season. Located on the shore of the Caspian Sea, the city sits at northerly latitude therefore Baku weather is characteristically different in comparison to other locations that fall under the same climatic category. This difference is most apparent during the summer season, whose patterns never reach the extremely hot levels usually associated with the semi-arid category.

Baku weather is also the most arid the whole of Azerbaijan experiences. On average, the city receives a meagre 200mm of precipitation per year (levels occasionally dropping even lower); although summer is by far the driest season, rainfall remains rather scarce throughout the year.

Weather in Baku during the summer season is also characterised by extensive hours of sunshine. Along with its location on the Caspian, the abundant amounts of sunshine Baku experiences have made it one of Azerbaijan’s most popular holiday destinations, a fact that has its roots in the by-gone era of the Soviet Union, when thousands of tourists would arrive to experience first hand the city’s renowned beaches and spa complexes.

As mentioned earlier, weather in Baku during the summer season is notable not only for the scarce rain that falls on the city, but also for the high levels mercury reaches. Although averages during both July and August – unquestionably the hottest months of the year – hover around a comfortable 26.4 °C, it’s not uncommon for mercury to rise to 38°C, occasionally soaring to a sizzling 40 °C or even slightly higher. Because of the city’s proximity to the Caspian Sea, Baku weather during the summer season is renowned for its high levels of humidity. However a wind known locally as the khazri that frequently sweeps through the city brings some much desired coolness and relief from the prevailing heat.

During winter, Baku weather retains a cold disposition throughout, occasionally veering towards significantly wetter conditions. Daily average temperatures for January and December stand at 4.3 °C; however when the khazri decides to pay the city a visit, driven as it is by masses of polar air, Baku weather becomes bitterly cold with temperatures frequently nose diving bellow freezing point. Although snow fall should not be ruled out completely, its appearances are somewhat rather rare and insignificant; when its does decide to grace Baku with its presence, it tends to remain on the ground for a few days only after each snowfall.

Another major characteristic of Baku weather is the winds that sweep through the city almost throughout the whole year, earning it a reputation as a windy area. Although the speed and ferocity of these gale-force winds is definitely more pronounced during the winter season, both the cold northern wind khazri and the warm southern wind gilavar can decide to pay the city at any given time of the year. During winter the khazri often picks speeds of 144km, leaving destruction behind, causing damage to trees, roofs and crops.

If you planning on visiting the city, your safest bet would be to do so between mid April through October, when Baku weather is at its most pleasant and welcoming even to those not accustomed to its peculiarities. Even during the summer season – and despite the heat that dominates conditions during the day – nights remain cool almost throughout, so come prepared with a few warm sweaters in your luggage. In sharp contrast, the winter months are best be avoided as weather in Baku can get bitterly cold.
